Since becoming a member of the royal family Meghan Markle has had to follow many rules that are both weird and wonderful, but the banned use of certain words certainly falls into the ‘weird’ category.
LISTEN: Does Meghan Markle now have an English accent?
According to etiquette, certain (fairly normal) words are banned from being uttered by those in the royal family.
From couch to toilet, here are the seven words Meghan Markle can’t say.
1. Toilet
According to The Sun, if you’re ever in Buckingham Palace and find yourself needing to use the bathroom, royals will not appreciate you using the word ‘toilet’.
‘Loo’ is considered the polite word to use by members of the royal family.
2. Couch
Apparently the word ‘couch’ is considered common by members of the royal family.
Their prefered word for this staple piece of furniture: ‘sofa’.

3. Posh
Despite many of us commoners describing the royal family as ‘posh’, one must not refer to one’s self as ‘posh’.
The royal family would use the word ‘smart’ instead.
4. Pardon
Whilst most of us view the word ‘pardon’ as polite, in upper-class circles it is absolutely NOT to be used.
If you ever find yourself rubbing shoulder with the royals we suggest you use the word ‘sorry’ instead of ‘pardon’.

5. Perfume
According to The Sun, Queen Elizabeth detests the word ‘perfume’.
If you ever find yourself in front of the Queen and want to compliment her, say the word ‘scent’ instead.
6. Tea
Tea can be used when referring to the beverage, but royals are not to say ‘tea’ when referring to their evening meal.
Dinner is also off the table (pun intended).
The royal family strictly eat breakfast, lunch and supper, got it?
7. Dessert
Well, this is just depressing.
The topic of dessert is unfortunately banned in the royal family, with the word never to be used.
If you are after something sweet in Buckingham Palace, you can request for pudding.
