And no low was more pronounced than when the young royals split in 2007.

In his 2011 work William and Catherine, royal biographer Andrew Morton claims the Cambridge’s temporary separation was music to the ears of Kate’s friends, Express.co.uk reports.

“In April 2007, when Clarence House unofficially let the world know that the romance between William and Kate had run its course, few of her friends shed a tear,” Mr Morton writes.

“The prevailing reaction for most of them was, ‘thank goodness that’s over!”

Mr Morton goes on to say Kate had been lost “down the rabbit hole” of the Windsor wonderland while dating Prince Charles‘ son, causing her to drift from her closest confidantes by “not making the effort to see them”.

The author, who previously authored a biography on William’s mother Princess Diana, sensationally claims Kate felt she was William’s servant rather than his girlfriend, before branding the Duke of Cambridge “obstinate and strong-willed”.

Friends of the Duchess-to-be told Mr Morton “it was an edgy relationship – they were always in and out” with plenty of arguments and break-ups along the way.

But over a decade on from their short lived separation, the Cambridge’s look happier than ever.
