Was Garter Day one dose too many of pomp, ceremony and chatting with foreign heads of state for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall?

It certainly seemed that way at certain points for Camilla, with the Duchess looking decidedly over it as she sported a scowl and an air of disinterest during moments of the royal festivities.

The event saw the Queen and the royal knights parading through the grounds of Windsor Castle, as newly invested members of the order, King Felipe VI of Spain and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands – now supernumerary, or stranger knights –walked to St George’s Chapel with the Prince of Wales, Duke of Cambridge, Duke of York, Princess Royal and Earl of Wessex.

The pomp was watched by Camilla as well as Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Spain’s Queen Letizia, and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands.

But between all the endless smiles, Camilla seemed to be struggling to maintain her focus.

‘It’s been a busy few weeks for Camilla, who isn’t the hardest working member of the royal family,’ reports a source.

‘She had the Trumps over, and now this. She looked fed up at some points; brief flashes where she had a grumpy face that could sour milk.

‘I’m sure she’d love to be at home with a stiff gin.’

Camilla created a sensation last week, when the wife of Prince Charles was caught on camera offering a sneaky wink to behind the backs of the President of the United States and the First Lady, Melania Trump, when the duo joined them for tea at Clarence House.

Camilla’s attitude to work has been slammed before. Robert Higdon, the former head of Charles’ charities in the US, was quoted as saying on the Duchess: ‘For her to get up in the morning and survive until nightfall is a major effort.

‘It was even hard for her to get out of bed. She tries her best to do nothing during the day. It was horrible, a disaster.’

Cheer up Camilla, things will quieten down soon.
