The TODAY entertainment reporter was forced to fight back tears as he spoke of his long-time friend.
"Sad news this morning and spare a thought for the gorgeous Olivia Newton-John, please. The back pain that has been causing her issues recently, we thought it was sciatica, has turned out to be breast cancer," he started.
"Which has spread to her lower back...Sorry..." he said, fighting back tears.
"Olivia has postponed her immediate concert dates as she undergoes radiation therapy, he continued. "We send her all our love. She's a wonderful person. It is so sad."
Co-host Lisa Wilkinson offered Wilkins support by reaching out to hold his hand.
"She is an incredibly close friend of yours', Wilkinson said.
"She said she is going to be back performing later this year," Wilkins replied.
Newton-John and Wilkins have reportedly been friends for many years.
