We never knew. - by Grace Back

Her Majesty's bright and bold style choices continue to dazzle fans. But, it turns out Queen Elizabeth's fashion choices is not just for personal preference, a royal expert has revealed.

In 2013 Netflix documentary The Royals, fashion editor Katherine Ormerod explains the reasons behind Her Majesty's famously vibrant fashion.

“It marks her out immediately of her security team,” she says.

She adds: “It’s a question of safety.”

The block colours are also a way for royal fans to catch a glimpse of the Queen while in large crowds.

“It means she can be always be identified, not only by those looking after her but by everyone in the crowd,” explains Ormerod.

Ormerod also notes: “It has become her serious style signature. It has a multi-purpose value for her.”

According to the Queen’s biographer Robert Hardman, she once said: “I can never wear beige because nobody will know who I am."

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, also explains how the Queen thinks about her public appearances.

"She needs to stand out for people to be able to say 'I saw the Queen,'” she says in the documentary The Queen at 90.
