Insiders claim that the young royals are at each other’s throats, while the Queen was none too impressed that Meghan and Harry were a no-show, and Kate and William broke royal protocol by being late to the annual service.
But the real bone of contention was the tension caused by Eugenie and Beatrice – who are currently causing a stir after Bea was ‘turfed out’ of St James’s Palace last month.
‘Things couldn’t be more tense between the young royals at the moment, and everything really came to a head at the Easter service over the weekend,’ says a palace insider.
‘Matters have been heated ever since Harry proposed and Meghan moved onto the scene – and they only got worse after Eugenie scheduled to have her wedding at the same chapel as Harry and Meghan.’
The insider claims that the girls are jealous of Meghan and are upset they are being knocked back for royal jobs.
‘There’s a lot of jealousy flying around – Bea and Eugenie just don’t think Meghan is good enough to be a royal.
‘And with Bea and Eugenie being knocked back for official royal jobs recently, it only made things worse – and made for one very tense church gathering indeed,’ the insider adds.
The showdown reached a climax when the girls blatantly snubbed Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, then disrespected the Queen and had to be told to ‘show some respect’.
‘Things were so bad, Eugenie and Bea wouldn’t even stand with Wills and Kate after the service – while Meghan and Harry didn’t even turn up,’ the insider spills.
‘The truth is that Meghan and Harry had another personal crisis on their hands to deal with – but despite that, Bea and Eugenie took it as a massive insult and told everyone how appalling it was Meghan had ditched the traditional service the first time she was invited.’
But drama reached fever pitch when Beatrice ‘refused to curtsey for the Queen,’ a move which sent shock waves through the rest of the royal family.
Last month reports emerged that Beatrice had been ‘forced’ out of St James’s Palace. Insiders revealed that Bea was faced with the awkward task of moving out of her shared apartment with Eugenie once her sister marries Jack Brooksbank later this year.
However, according to exclusive New Idea sources, Beatrice and Eugenie are placing the blame for Bea’s eviction firmly on Meghan, who has already moved into Kensington Palace, despite not officially being a royal until she marries.
‘Bea thinks it’s disgusting that Meghan should get to live at Kensington Palace while she’s turfed out of St James’s – she’s of royal blood and is in line to the throne, she deserves a home at the palace,’ spills the royal insider.
‘Eugenie also hates that they’ve become forgotten because of Kate and Meghan – they’ve married into the royal family, and shouldn’t have more privileges than them. So it’s no surprise that there’s a lot of bad blood between them – and it’s only getting worse.’
The royal sisters are said to be quietly seething at all the attention their ‘commoner’ rivals are getting. And it doesn’t help that Kate and Meghan are growing closer by the day.
Adding to the tension is the fact that Princess Beatrice has been banned from bringing her new boyfriend to Meghan and Harry’s wedding.
‘All plus-ones have been banned from the big day, but Bea is fuming that an exception wasn’t made for her – she’s not some nobody, she’s Prince Andrew’s daughter.’
The wedding invitations have, in fact, been a source of contention not just for Bea, but for her younger sister, too.
There have been rumours that Eugenie and Jack were actually the first to get engaged, but were forced to keep their union a secret until Meghan and Harry had made their own official announcement.
In the meantime, poor Kate, who is about to have her third child, has been left to pick up the pieces.
‘Kate knows that Bea and Eugenie can be troublemakers and is trying to keep them at arm’s length from Meghan.
‘It’s the last thing she needs in the lead-up to her wedding, so Kate’s doing her best to keep tensions at bay.’
