Years later, the Duke of Cambridge and his wife, Kate Middleton, were also caught up in their own 'topless' scandal.
In 2017 Prince William sought £1.3million compensation over topless photos of Kate on holiday, which were published in French Closer magazine in 2012.
Prince William confessed the images were "all the more painful" as they reminded him of the way his mother died, as she was pursued by paparazzi photographers in Paris on August 31, 1997.
The French celebrity magazine was eventually ordered to pay 103,000 euros (£92,000) in damages to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for publishing the photos.
