Hazza and Meg's Dubbo must do's

The Royals are going regional and we’ve got their itinerary sorted! - by Thomas Mitchell
  • 13 Sep 2018

Earlier this week it was announced that Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were set to visit Dubbo, NSW, as part of their first official overseas tour.

Needless to say there were a few eyebrows raised and some commentators thought perhaps there had been some kind of major planning mishap. As if the Royal family's’ official travel agent (I presume that’s a job), accidentally included Dubbo instead of say, Double Bay.

Now I feel like I’m in a unique position to advise Harry and Meghan on how best to do Dubbo.

My girlfriend’s family are lifelong residents, so I’ve spent some serious time in the Central West.

In fact, I’ve come to think of myself as an unofficial part of the community - no one else thinks that, but I certainly do.

So with that in mind, here are some top tips on how the newlyweds can spend their day in Dubbo.

Smash a cheese and bacon pie at The Village Bakery

It seems Dubbo Mayor Ben Shields, has already gotten onto this, telling reporters that M + H must swing by the Village Bakery for a cheese and bacon pie and I couldn’t agree more.

Having sampled this pie on tens on occasions, there’s no better way to literally digest Dubbo (or bounce back from a hangover) then by putting away a couple of these bad boys.

Buy a CD at Sanity in Orana Mall like it’s 1998

One of my favourite things about Dubbo is that it still has a Sanity music store. While Sanity left the big smoke many moons ago, it’s going strong in regional NSW. Harry should swing by and pick up a Dido CD for Meghan.

Hire Bikes at Western Plains Zoo

Undoubtedly one of Dubbo’s biggest attractions, it’s a no brainer that Harry and Meghan should visit the zoo. But rather than walk around like plebs, they should hire a couple of bikes!

It’s the best way to make sure you see all the animals on offer plus if Meg pops a wheelie she’ll be an instant hero.

Wet your whistle at The Amaroo

Being a royal is thirsty work and after all that sightseeing, the newleys deserve a drink. Hightail it out to The Amaroo and pull up a stool. To truly channel your inner-Dubbo, you need to kick the session off with a ‘rumbo’ (rum and cola), before eventually hitting the smokers section for a few darts. Hang around till late when downstairs turns into a nightclub - that’s where you’ll see the real Dubbo.

Ride the Rhino at Dubbo Airport

Last but not least, no trip to Dubbo is complete without riding the rhino statue that stands proudly outside Dubbo’s airport. The statue was actually stolen earlier this year (in the most Dubbo crime of all time), but thankfully it has been returned. The Duke and Duchess should hop on the rhino and snap a selfie - the Queen will love it.
