This year the annual speech focussed on Brexit and creating jobs after leaving the EU. As well as the work on the rail network and a pledge to increase time in prison for people convicted of serious violent crimes.
What’s more The Queen decided to forgo wearing the traditional Imperial State Crown to the event and chose the much lighter George IV Diadem.
The Imperial State Crown weighs close to 1.3kg, and was instead carried on a red and gold cushion for the event.

Charles’ appearance alongside his mother was reportedly not only for moral support but a way of making the British public accustomed to seeing the future king at important royal events.
Indeed, this isn’t the first time Charles has attended the state opening of Parliament. He was also in attendance during the 2017 event as well.
