They may be cute and cuddly but your favourite dogs aren’t the smartest investment according to experts.
An anonymous Twitter post has revealed the thoughts of what vets really think, and small ‘teacup’ dogs top the list.
The post, titled ‘What vets really think about which dog you should buy’, details how small dogs are often sickly and likely to have suffered from bad conditions as pups.
It also says animal lovers shouldn’t buy, ‘Anything with an adult size smaller than a cat or bigger than a newborn calf.’
Veterinarian Cat Henstridge, who shared the post, tells The Daily Mail owning smaller dogs has led to disreputable breeding thanks to its trendy celebrity-inspired status.
‘Toy breed of dogs, for example a Chihuahua or a Yorkshire Terrier, can make excellent companions but it is vital you ensure they have been bred responsibly,’ she told the publication.
‘They are very popular with puppy farmers because of their small sizes and high purchase prices but dogs produced this way are often sickly and will have suffered appalling conditions as youngsters.
‘We have recently seen a worrying increase in the popularity of ‘teacup’ versions of these breeds, which are produced by mating the of the runts of the litter and their tiny size definitely leaves them vulnerable to problems.’
