A mother-of-three who allegedly faked cancer and scammed thousands out of friends and family has been charged.

Kelly Val Smith, 38, has been charged with 36 counts of fraud after she faked ovarian cancer and used her son’s illness for financial gain, scamming more than $325,000, the Daily Mail reports.

According to reports people donated large sums from $12,000 up to $150,000.


‘I think when it’s someone close to you and you think they’re going to go through something so tragic, you do everything you can to make sure that doesn’t happen to them,’ a family friend told Channel 7.

‘It just hurts everyone and there’s too many people that have given and been hurt by this and trusted her,’ she added.
