One miracle has emerged from yesterday’s horrifying accident at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast – the survival of two young children who were thrown from the Thunder River Rapids ride when it flipped, tragically killing four adults who were also on board.
The fatalities include mother Kate Goodchild, 32, her brother, Luke Dorsett, 35, and his partner Roozbeh Araghi, 38, and Sydney-based Cindy Low – who was on the ride with her son, aged 10. Kate was reportedly the mother of the 12-year-old.
Assistant Commissioner of police Brian Codd has told the media today that it was by ‘the providence of God’ that the two children survived.
Referring to CCTV video of the horror, which he has viewed as part of the investigation, the Assistant Commissioner added, ‘From what I’ve seen, it’s almost a miracle that anybody came out of that.
‘If we’re going to be thankful for anything, I’m thankful for that.’
Kim Dorsett, mother of Kate and Luke, has told the Courier Mail that her granddaughter is naturally distraught.
‘I’ve been with her all afternoon and all night and she has gone to stay somewhere else,’ she told the paper.
‘Like me, she is still coming to terms with it all but she is completely devastated – she is blaming herself for what has happened.
‘She has had a truly terrible day, she is going through unimaginable pain at the moment. I’m at a loss as to how to deal with this now – I woke up this morning with three children and tomorrow I am only going to have one left.’
Kate Goodchild is reported to have been the mother of two children, with an eight month old believed to have been with the children’s father at the theme park at the time of the accident.
