An Aussie TV crew have been attacked by a gang of cross-dressing muggers near Rio’s most famous tourist beach, with one member assaulted with a handbag, which was apparently weighed down with a brick.
Channel Nine’s Christine Ahern has spoken of the terrifying attack, which again raises grave fears about safety in the Olympic city.
‘There was a group of transvestites and it all happened in a flash,’ she told 3AW. ‘One came straight for my cameraman Glen and that’s when security intervened, but he did get clocked on the head with a handbag, which had a brick or something in it as it was pretty hard.’
Ahern says that the attack happened despite a strong police presence in the beach area, which is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Brazil.
