Sydney sailor Tom Burton rated his chances of pulling off a miracle win in the laser class gold medal showdown this morning as one in 10 at best.
But the odds fell his way thanks to a masterly display of sailing to put Australia back on top of the podium for the seventh time at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Tom bedazzled runaway points leader Tonci Stipanovic with a move near the start of the final race that forced the Croatian to take a critical penalty turn.
“I was even talking to my coach before the race thinking `if we did this 10 times how many times would I be able to pull it off’ and he said `nah 25 per cent’,” an ecstatic Tom told the Seven Network.
“And I said `I think one out of 10′. And all you need is the one, and that’s exactly what I put out today.”
