Never again. Those were the words I muttered to myself after one of those trips to the supermarket with my daughters.
It all started off nicely enough. There we were moving through the aisles, picking up the groceries we needed along the way … until they both wanted to sit in the trolley at the same time.
‘Mummy, it’s not faiiiirrrrrrrr’ wailed my six-year-old, at the top of her lungs.
‘You’re too big to sit in the trolley,” I replied fairly and firmly in that sing songy voice mums have when they are trying to be nice but want to scream. Picking up speed down Aisle 8 in the hope of outrunning the conversation my daughter had different ideas.
Then I heard the words no mother wants to hear with a trolley full of food and her sanity on thin ice: ‘Mummy, I’m hungry!’
That’s when I had a brainwave. ‘I tell you what,’ I told her. ‘If you can wait for just five minutes, I’ll take you guys to McDonald’s as a special treat after we finish shopping.’ Well you’d think I’d just told her she could buy a pony, she was so excited. ‘Deal!’ she smiled.
So off we went to McDonald’s which worked out perfectly as it was close to lunch time anyway! I’d never tried their Summer Sides Box before but it kept those kids QUIET AND SMILEY! And I quite enjoyed it myself, I mean, who doesn’t love Chicken McNuggets?!
Now they’re asking me constantly if they can go supermarket shopping with me again and “help” like they did last time so they get their Macca’s treat. Nice try kids, nice try.
