New Teen Star Kyle Chalmers Kick-Starts Aussie Gold Hunt

A new Aussie young gun makes a big splash in Rio

Kyle Chalmers upstaged his more favoured teammate Cameron McEvoy for a stunning win in the final of the 100 metres freestyle at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games today.

The 18-year-old “country boy” from South Australia was tipped as a second-string hope in the glamour event behind Cameron, the world’s number one ranked freestyler over the distance.

But instead it was fast-improving Kyle who left Cameron floundering in seventh place as he powered through the star-studded field in the final 20 metres for Australia’s fifth Olympic gold medal in Rio.

“It’s definitely still sinking in that I’ve actually won,” said the world’s fastest junior minutes after touching first.

“I was a bit worried that I’d glided too much at the finish.”

Australia’s gold tally had stalled on four since the women’s sevens rugby team won on day three.
