Mummy blogger who poisoned son for attention is brutalised in jail

She says she is under attack by enraged inmates

The ‘mummy blogger’ who became famous online for documenting her son’s mysterious illness and eventual death, only for it to be later revealed she’d been poisoning him to get attention and sympathy, has confessed her life in prison is ‘brutal’.

Lacey Spears, 28, was imprisoned for second degree murder of her 5-year-old son Garnett, after it was found she’d been infusing his hospital feeding tubes with toxic levels of salt. It’s been theorised that Spears has a condition called Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy, where people inflict illness or injury on others – often their children – in order to become the centre of attention.

Her treatment in jail includes prison food workers dumping salt on her food in a threatening gesture, according to her sister, Rebecca.

‘It’s been brutal here,’ Lacey told author John Glatt. ‘Crimes involving children are considered the worst here.

‘I hear them talking behind my back, calling me “baby killer,” “child killer,”and “mother of the year”. But I know it’s not who I am.’

She went on to say that she is friendless in prison and is struggling to adjust. Although she has reportedly been offered protective custody, it’s believed she has refused it, not wishing to remain in total isolation for most of the day.

‘It’s been very hard, adjusting to being here,’ she told Glatt. ‘You always have to look behind your back, and I don’t trust anyone. I don’t have any friends, but I have people to talk to.’

Spears continues to maintain she is innocent, even suggesting hospital workers were behind her son’s fatal 2014 salt poisoning.  But a court disagreed, and she will now serve 20 years.
