A Sydney mother who threw her baby boy in a drain in 2014 has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison.
The 32-year-old woman, who is intellectually impaired, returned to the drain several times after throwing her newborn away, but assumed he was dead when she couldn’t hear him cry.
A passing cyclist found the baby was found alive, but malnourished, five days later.
One of the cyclists who found the baby told Fairfax Media at the time, ‘I’ve got two kids of my own, so I know what a screaming baby sounds like.’
‘It was so intense, you couldn’t not tell it was a baby.’
The Daily Telegraph reports the woman, who can’t be named, ‘has the cognitive reasoning capacity of a middle primary school student.’
After giving birth to her child at Blacktown hospital, the woman caught the train to Quakers Hill and sat in the park.
‘Then I just saw the drain,’ she later told Police. ‘Then I just put baby in there.’
With a minimum sentence of one year and nine months, the woman will be eligible for parole next month.
