The mother, 40, and another woman in her late 20s were arrested in 2014 after a doctor at Bradford Royal Infirmary noticed the boy’s injuries.

The boy’s six-year-old sister explained to the jury at Bradford Crown Court that her mother’s friend used to beat her brother.

‘She got him out of the cupboard and he was naked and she got tissue paper and wrapped it round the stick. It was metal and silver and small,’ the Telegraph and Argus reports the girl as saying.

‘She put the tissue where she put her hand. First she hit him on the leg and then she hit him on the arm, and then she hit him on his face. He started bleeding from his chin.’

On one occasion the family and the mum’s friend went to Blackpool on an outing while the boy was locked in the cupboard.

The abuse is alleged to have occurred over a 21 month  between August, 2012, and April, 2014.
