Australian born Chris Lane was shot dead at random on the side of the road in the U.S. city of Oklahoma in 2013. Now, one of the young American men charged with his murder is begging Chris Lane’s family for forgiveness.
Melbourne born Lane, who had secured a baseball scholarship to study in Oklahoma, was out jogging in broad daylight when he was shot dead in a drive-by attack.
Channel Seven’s In Cold Blood: The Chris Lane Story features a one-off interview with Michael Jones, one of the three young men charged with Lane’s murder.
In the interview, Jones begs Lane’s family for forgiveness, “I know I’ve put you all through a lot…and there’s nothing I can say or do to ever change what happened but…I do hope that they can find it, you know, to forgive me, you know”.
“I just, I just, I’d tell them that I really am truly sorry and…I know they’re never going to see Chris again and that’s something that not only them but I have to live with because they’re not ever going to see Chris again at my hand.” Jones continued.
“You know I may not have pulled the trigger but I drove away and that’s just as bad.”
Chancey Luna, a local teenager who was just 16-years-old when he murdered Lane, was sentenced last year to life in prison. Luna was involved in the drive-by attack with two other teenagers, Michael Jones and James Edward. Edward’s will serve 15 years, whilst Jones, who was driving the vehicle, will not be eligible for release until 2054.
Jones has said he will think about the murder “every day for the rest of my life.”
