JonBenet Ramsey’s father John has broken his silence to slam claims that his young son Burke murdered the child beauty queen, and dismissed suggestions that he and his wife then participated in an elaborate cover-up, to make it look like a kidnapper or child sex pervert invaded their home and killed the girl.
Speaking exclusively to Meshel Laurie of KIIS 101.1’s Matt & Meshel, John raged against the recent documentary series The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey, which concluded that Burke accidentally killed his sister on Christmas night back in 1996 – with John and his late wife Patsy supposedly colluding to cover up the accident. He says the allegation he covered up the crime was ‘nonsensical’.
‘The CBS show that came out, it was disgraceful,’ he told the Aussie radio show. ‘We will sue them.
‘Let’s assume that Burke accidentally hit JonBenet, accidentally or intentionally, as this CBS show claims. What would you do as a parent? Would you say, “OK, let’s strangle her, let’s write a three-page ransom note and fake the whole thing?” No, you’d have said, “Let’s get her to the hospital immediately”. To think that a parent would do that doesn’t pass the common sense test. It’s nonsense, and I don’t know how to respond to that.’
John added that it was absurd to suggest that a very young child, like Burke was at the time, could be capable of landing a killer blow to the skull, of the kind that apparently killed the little girl.
‘Keep in mind, Burke was a nine-year-old child who weighed 60 pounds. This was a very brutal, savage murder.’
Speaking of criticism Burke has recently sustained over his smiling and awkward body language during his TV interview with Dr Phil, John said his son’s attitude has been misinterpreted.
‘I was with Burke a couple of days ago, and I was watching him when he was talking. He naturally smiles when he talks — that’s just Burke.’
Addressing the suspicion that surrounded his family after they employed an attorney in the wake of the crime, John says it was the only wise thing to do in the circumstances.
‘We have a good friend who is a former district attorney. He said, “you need to get the best defence lawyers you can get”. This was within a couple of days after the murder.
‘The police attitude is, “You don’t need a lawyer if you’re innocent.” Well, that’s not true at all. If you’re innocent and you’re dealing with the police, you’d better have a very good lawyer.’
In conclusion, John says many people still suspect the family simply because they cannot accept the full horror of the alternative – that a predator can invade a family home and do their worst to an innocent little girl.
‘Even hardcore criminals wouldn’t harm a child. It’s a horrible crime and people want an answer — so the easiest answer is, “Well it must’ve been the parents”. They don’t want to accept that someone could come in your home, take your child from your bed, and murder them. I never expected that.’
