It’s the story that has all of Britain talking today, and frankly, we’re almost lost for words!
Many couples have strange or even downright bizarre stories about how they met, but this really takes the cake. Engaged British couple Mark Ellis and Donna Roberts say they met after he cold-called her number, which had been scrawled on the wall of a public convenience by her spiteful ex-boyfriend.
Truck driver Mark confesses he texted the number for a laugh, after seeing the tawdry graffiti on the way to his local pub, which read, ‘Call this number if you’re looking for a sl*g’.
‘I felt sick’, recalled Donna in UK That’s Life! magazine, after receiving the unsolicited messages. ‘My ex must have written it.’
Mark told the Sun on Sunday of his impulsive decision: ‘I was curious to know if it was a real human being. We still laugh about it.’
But apparently disgust soon turned to curiosity, when the then 19-year-old was won over by Mark’s texting charm and agreed to meet him in a public spot in the city some days later. She was shocked when a middle aged man turned up – and then realised that she’d never asked him his age.
‘Despite the age gap we hit it off,’ Donna, 26, a legal secretary, told UK That’s Life!. ‘Seven years and two children later, we’re happily engaged.
‘As unromantic as it sounds, I’m so happy Mark responded to the graffiti in the loo that day.’
Indeed, she told Britain’s Sun on Sunday newspaper that, ‘I should thank my ex — he did me a favour.’
But it seems Donna has yet to tell her two kids, aged eight and nine, the full story. ‘I usually say that he texted me by mistake,’ she told the paper.
