Family Meal Mayhem

The perfect Sunday dinner...

Family meals sound good in theory. You always think they’re going to go like an episode of The Brady Bunch – sitting around at home, delighting over a meal of perfectly-prepared food with everyone smiling sweetly at each other as they happily finish their food and talk about their day.

But in our house, they’re always something very, very different.

Take last Sunday for example. My daughter thought it would be nice for me to cook a big meal for all the family and she wanted burgers and home-made hot chips. Big mistake.

I was on making batch number two of the burgers (I’d forgotten the first six were under the grill and they ended up like toasted charcoal) when my daughter announced she was a vegetarian and ‘couldn’t possibly’ eat a ‘little baby cow’ and then – shock horror – my other daughter decided she was a vegetarian as well.

I decided that their newfound vegetarianism was fine, they could eat the rest of the meal – until disaster struck. As I was taking the roasted potatoes I was passing off as chips out of the oven I dropped them and the dog swiftly came in and ate them all.

With that, I declared my family meal a disaster and rather than start again, I figured the whole family deserved a treat and there was only one solution. I grabbed the keys so we could head to McDonald’s. I figured now was as good a time to eat their favourite meals and to share the yummy new Summer Sides Box.

Suddenly my kids forgot they were vegetarian as we all sat and enjoyed the Chicken McNuggets, Chicken McBites and Hash Brown bites. And yes, we did get a bit Brady Bunch as we sat around talking, smiling and discussing our day. Wonder how long that will last…
