Every five years the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) collects information on everyone in the country to create a snapshot of the nation and this year is the first time the Census has gone digital.

By now, you should have received your unique 12-digit Census login code in the mail. Postie missed you? Accidently threw it out? Don’t panic, simply call 1300 214 531.

Filling in the Census, whether on the paper form or online, is compulsory. The Census site is up now. Failure to complete the Census could result in a fine of up to $1800.

Failure to include your full name, or failure to properly complete the census, could result in fines of $180 per day for an unlimited amount of days.

Designed to provide a snapshot of where everyone is on one particular night, you need to include any house guests on your form, and if you are overseas on August 9, you are not required to complete the Census.

The ABS is confident their online system will be able to withstand the high volumes of online traffic expected, and as for any security fears? ‘No one takes privacy more seriously than the ABS.’
