A Brisbane mum, who confessed to trying assaulting her five-month-old baby, told police that she was ‘possessed’ at the time.
Ashleigh Meagan Watterson, 30, faced Brisbane Supreme Court charged with two counts of attempted murder, on count of causing grievous bodily harm, and one count of assault.
During 2010 ambulances visited the the devout Christian woman’s home to revive her daughter, Sarah, who was said to suffer from ‘apnoea’ which would cause her to stop breathing in her sleep.
Later in 2013 she told police:
‘During the time Sarah was having apnoea… she wasn’t having any apnoea events, that was me.’
‘The devil can attack you and can make you do things and I feel that’s what happened,” she told Redcliffe police on August 19, 2013.
The Courier-Mail reports that the court was told Sarah suffered permanent brain damage after her mother attempted to suffocate her.
Ashleigh sent a revealing text to her sister, Lisa, shortly after her police interview:
‘I was weak and the devil got me.
‘Lisa, I was possessed, my hands did it.’
On March 20, 2012, Sarah died however her cause of death was not determined.
In a statement to the Brisbane Supreme Court that ‘I feel the devil attacked and made me do things.’ reports Kidspot.
The trial is ongoing.
