Rising sports star Chris Lane was gunned down on a searingly hot summer afternoon while out jogging half a world away in small town Oklahoma.

The Aussie baseball scholarship student was only 22 when he was left to die by the side of the road. But his murderers – who told police they shot him in the back because they were bored – were even younger.

In a world exclusive investigation, Seven News has now spoken in depth to one of Chris’ killers, to grief-stricken parents Peter and Donna Lane, and to their son’s young American girlfriend Sarah Harper.

Struggling to express her conflicted feelings about the murderers, Chris’ Melbourne- based mum tearfully tells award- winning journalist Mike Amor: ‘Well, they’re boys – they’re not men.’
