It’s been a long and difficult battle, but brave couple Ashley and Ben have embarked on the adventure of a lifetime.
The budding dessert expert and his partner of 10 years are halfway through the process of starting a family together using a surrogate. ‘It will be like our modern family,’ Ashley laughs.
‘We’ve got a surrogate and we’ve started our specialist appointments, so we’re at the egg donor stage and that’s very exciting.’
With strict rules in Australia surrounding surrogacy and egg donation, the pair face a battle.
‘The whole catch with an egg donor in Australia is that you can’t pay,’ Ashley explains.
‘It’s the same for surrogacy. It can’t be like a cash transaction because then it becomes illegal.
‘You’re trying to fnd someone preferably who has already got kids… or someone who has been through IVF and has eggs frozen that they don’t want to use.’
However, Ben and Ashley are determined to make their dreams come true.
‘We’re aiming to try and get pregnant by the middle of next year,’ Ashley says.
