A mother is haunted by her decision to have her tubes tied following the death of her newborn daughter.
Katherine Lawson was sure her daughter Imogen would complete her family so planned to have a tubal litigation immediately after the C-section that delivered her beloved daughter.
Katherine and her husband Ben, from Perth, were thrilled when Imogen was born on February 23, completing their family with sons, Nicholas, seven, and Matthew, two.
But as Katherine underwent the sterilisation, Imogen started to have trouble breathing. As Katherine recovered from the surgery it became clear her daughter was seriously ill. Both lungs had collapsed and before Katherine could hold her she was transferred to another hospital.
Tests revealed Imogen had persistent pulmonary hypertension where her circulation had trouble adapting to breathing and this was complicated by a secondary condition. Sadly, Imogen died on May 3.
Months later Katherine is advising other parents: ‘Never do anything permanent, when nothing is permanent in this life.’
She is haunted by her decision and is now considering IVF to have another baby.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page. As Katherine says: ‘Life is a blessing, not a given.’
