A man accused of fatally stabbing his wife at their western Sydney unit on Saturday night had found out she was having an affair.
According to his lawyers, 33-year-old Shahab Ahmed, confronted Khondkar Faihi Elahi after allegedly finding text messages on her phone that suggested she was cheating on him.
After an argument ensued between the pair, Ahmed allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the 29-year-old in the chest.
As she struggled with her injuries, he called emergency services and told them what had happened.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that police arrived just before 10pm and arrested the man – who was covered in his wife’s blood – as paramedics worked to save Elahi.
She was taken to Westmead Hospital where she died a short time later.
The Bangladeshi national appeared at Parramatta Local Court yesterday and was charged with murder.
Speaking outside the court, Ahmed’s lawyer, Zemarai Khatiz, said his client was highly distressed over the incident.
“The deceased was having an affair,” Khatiz revealed.
“He found out about it and the relationship came to a very tragic end.”
It is believed that the couple had been married for five years.
