The scene, filmed by a concerned member of the public and screened by 7 News, will raise questions about the effectiveness of the mental health system in identifying and effectively dealing with the man’s apparent problems ahead of his alleged actions in the city a week later.
On Tuesday Ney, 20, allegedly went on a terrifying rampage through Sydney after CCTV footage captured him leaving an apartment on Clarence Street where a woman was murdered.
The footage captures Ney in an the alleyway taking a selfie before putting a balaclava on.
On Wednesday, August 14, it was confirmed a young woman named Michaela Dunn, 24 was killed amid the Sydney knife rampage.
The victim, a marketing and public relations graduate, was found with fatal stab wounds to the neck and throat a short distance from where knife accused Mert Ney allegedly terrorised CBD pedestrians in chilling scenes that were filmed by onlookers, and viewed around the world.
Michaela’s body was found in her Clarence Street apartment at 3.15pm, yesterday an hour after the suspect was taken into custody. It is believed the pair knew each other.
In a 2016 Facebook post, Michaela expressed her outrage over violence against women.
‘Sexual violence and harassment is never acceptable. Take two minutes to read and sign this petition, it’s such an important issue that needs to be addressed sooner than later,’ she wrote.
Ney is also accused of stabbing a 41-year-old woman who was believed to be a random pedestrian. She is in a stable condition.
Michaela’s mother described her girl as a ‘beautiful, loving woman who had studied at university and travelled widely’. She also described her as ‘very much loved’.
Police reportedly believe the apparent attacker – who was apprehended by members of the public yesterday in a tense CBD showdown – slashed the woman’s throat with a butcher’s knife.
According to the Daily Mail, detectives are currently going through the victim and the perpetrator’s phones to establish the nature of their relationship.
While the man was reported to be shouting religious slogans, the Daily Telegraph is reporting that he is ‘believed to be an escaped mental patient’.
Vision captured at the scene shows a man on top of a car at a city intersection, waving a knife, before he falls to the ground as the car moves away. He is later heard asking to be shot.
Police were dispatched to King and Clarence Streets in the CBD, but it is believed members of the public detained the man ahead of their arrival.
Later vision, shown by Seven News, depicts the man pinned under a café chair by multiple men. A distressed witness at the scene is heard admonishing the man for ‘stabbing a chick’.
The alleged perpetrator is shown with blood on his hands and is seen relatively motionless, pinned under the chair with a milk crate over his head.
The man has yet to be charged.
