In the frightening footage, a small boy can be seen waiting to board a train with his mother at Sydney’s Sydenham train station.
As the boy walks to board the train, he steps into the gap between the platform and the train, falling down to the tracks below.
Thankfully, quick-thinking commuters and station staff rushed to help, pulling the boy to safety.
Speaking to 9NEWS after the incident, transport minister, Andrew Constance, encouraged parents and grandparents to be vigilant, particularly around school holidays.
“One split second lapse in concentration could see the loss of life of a child and we don’t want to see that,” he told 9NEWS.
Injuries across the train network are not uncommon.
In the past year, almost 200 children were injured across the train network. 34 per cent – 68 children – fell through the gap between platform and train, 9NEWS reported.
