Last week, it was reported that 71-year-old Maria de la Luz was pregnant with her eighth child.
De la Luz, from Mazatlan, a city in Mexico, appeared on television and showed reported ultrasound scans which she says confirms she is six months pregnant with a baby girl.
‘They told me it is a girl. Look, you can see her little face,’ she told reporters, while holding up an alleged ultrasound.
Now, it’s been revealed by doctors at the Mexican Institute of Social Security Hospital that Maria’s pregnancy is instead a tumour.
They said she needed more tests to find out if it was life threatening, and recommended a biopsy.
It’s believed that Maria was told of this condition, but did ‘not believe’ doctors.
Instead, a fortune teller had told the mother that she was going to conceive a baby girl, and she thought the prediction had come true.
Doctors are recommending she undergo specialist treatment for the tumour, but so far, she’s refused.
Officials say they hope she’ll return to the hospital when she experiences pain again.
The record for the oldest woman to give birth is held by Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara, who gave birth at 66.
