In an interview on 60 Minutes, heartbroken parents Ralph and Kathy Kelly revealed they believe their son Stuart – the brother of one-punch attack victim Thomas Kelly – killed himself after he was subjected to cruel hazing rituals at Sydney University’s St Paul’s College.
Stuart’s brother Thomas died in 2012 after he was coward-punched in Sydney’s Kings Cross. Ralph and Kathy believe Stuart was targeted at the college as a result, causing him to commit suicide last July.
‘He was one of the really popular kids, and he went off to university at Sydney, for one night at a college, and he came home a different person the following day. You know, it just changed him, he was broken,’ Mrs Kelly said.
‘We hadn’t seen him cry since Thomas died, so to see he was just sobbing, uncontrollably, and he came home and he went into his room and he basically didn’t come out for the next couple of months, so you can only assume that something catastrophic happened to him that made him feel the way he did.’
She believes the family’s campaign to introduce lock-out laws in NSW made them a target.
‘There were death threats and things like that to our family. What does that do to an 18-year-old?’ she said.
Mrs Kelly is also convinced Stuart would still be alive today had Thomas not been tragically killed.
‘I think 100 percent, had Thomas not been killed, then Stuart would be here today. Without a doubt,’ she revealed.
