United Airlines had asked four passengers to leave the Chicago to Louisville flight after realising that a flight was over-capacity.

After the passengers refused to leave the flight, and take up the offer of AUD$600 and free hotel room, the airline started to randomly select passengers.

One passenger told flight crew he was a doctor and had appointments in the morning that he couldn’t miss, however was forcibly removed from the flight – hitting his head in the process.

A fellow passenger said that the doctor made his way back on the plane but had a bloodied face, and was disorientated. He was then removed from the plane again.

“Everyone was shocked and appalled. There were several children on the flight as well that were very upset,” she said.

United Airlines said that the man was the only passenger who was forcibly removed from the full flight.

“Flight 3411 from Chicago to Louisville was overbooked,” the company said in a statement.

“After our team looked for volunteers, one customer refused to leave the aircraft voluntarily and law enforcement was asked to come to the gate.
