A man who claimed his pet dog was stolen at knife-point in Sydney Olympic Park earlier this month has been charged with making a false report to the police.
In fact, Police allege the late-night armed robbery which sparked a nation-wide search for the 14-month-old pug, never actually happened.
The 29-year-old claimed he was walking his puppy Egg near the corner of Australia Avenue and Parkview Drive on Feb. 9, when he was confronted by three men.
The man told police that the offenders were armed with knives and demanded his wallet and backpack before running off with his four-legged-friend.
Police made a desperate public appeal to find Egg, with his owner said to be “extremely distraught” and too devastated to face the media.
“Not only does he have the trauma of being the victim of quite a severe robbery… but also the fact that his prized possession, being a pug, has been stolen,” Detective Inspector Paul Arnold said in a statement at the time.
“Any person who has a dog knows what it’s like to go without a pet which you’ve nurtured and cared for.”
But after extensive investigations and an interview with the man at Aubury police station last night, officers decided that his story didn’t quite add up.
The man is set to appear at Burwood Local Court in April after being charged with making a false report of armed robbery.
A NSW Police spokesman has said that it is unclear exactly why the story was made up, but explains that there are still concerns for the missing pup’s welfare.
“Anyone with information of the dog’s whereabouts is urged to contact police,” he said.
