A Current Affair journalist Laura Turner has covered her own sister’s tragic death in a story on Melbourne’s heroin problem.
Skye, 36, died from a fatal dose of heroin on March 10 this year, and it was hours before anyone realised the mother had passed.
“My sister was beautiful and intelligent, she was three years older than me and she was my idol,” Laura said on ACA.
“But Skye had her demons, and later in life addiction took over.”
Their mother Marie emotionally explained that she was in hospital with Skye days before she died, but was discharged into the care of another addict.
Skye told her mother that she was worthless and should die.
“I said, ‘My daughter has threatened her own life. She has told me that she wants to die, that her life is not worth living, she has told me this today because I had been in the room with her'” Marie tearfully revealed.
“And what did they say? ‘They all say that’.
“My daughter is not ‘they all’. My daughter is a precious individual.”
Turner said if Sky had access to a legal injecting facility her sister might still be here today.
