One of Australia’s most-celebrated satirists John Clarke has died at the age of 68.
An ABC spokesman confirmed the comedian had passed from natural causes on Sunday while hiking in the Grampians National Park.
The New Zealand-born star – best known for his work as laconic farmer Fred Dagg – has been a well-known television personality since the 1970s.
As well as acting in series such as Kath and Kim and the multi-award winning mockumentary The Games, Clarke wrote and performed satirical interviews on A Current Affair and the ABC’s 7:30 program with his comedy partner Brian Dawe.
Clarke also experienced great success as an author, screenwriter and editor and published numerous books including A Dagg at my Table and The Howard Miracle.
Many have taken to social media to pay tribute to the star, with Dave Hughes remembering him as a “brilliantly funny man.”
