An ABC spokesman confirmed the comedian had passed from natural causes on Sunday while hiking in the Grampians National Park.

The New Zealand-born star – best known for his work as laconic farmer Fred Dagg – has been a well-known television personality since the 1970s.

As well as acting in series such as Kath and Kim and the multi-award winning mockumentary The Games, Clarke wrote and performed satirical interviews on A Current Affair and the ABC’s 7:30 program with his comedy partner Brian Dawe.

Clarke also experienced great success as an author, screenwriter and editor and published numerous books including A Dagg at my Table and The Howard Miracle.
