The annual lamb ad has been released in the lead up to Australia Day, and unsurprisingly it has caused quite a stir on social media.
The advertisement beings by jovially suggesting that Australia has “lost the plot” and that our only solution is to unite with New Zealand and its PM Jacinda Arden.
The ad begins with a government official despairing, “Cheating in sport, we can’t even hang on to a prime minister!”
Quickly, another government official pipes up, “There’s only one obvious solution don’t you think? We finally make New Zealand part of us.”
As well as the sacrilegious suggestion we unite with our little cousin – despite their successful run at seeing an elected prime minister head their government without a coup – the advertismeent has caused a considerble backlash by stating that if we could have a new country, “We could even have a new Australia Day.”
Australia Day marks the anniversary of the first fleet arriving at Port Jackson. The day has also been called ‘Invasion Day’, and the argument for a date change has gained considerable traction over the years.
Many social media commentators responded to the advertisement by calling it “disappointing” and stating that it “mocks” Australian politics.
Although it had its naysayers, others on social media labelled the add “pure gold” and “another ripper”.
