Burney, the Labor frontbencher, stood in federal parliament to explain her positive support for marriage equality, and in doing so made an incredibly heartwarming tribute to her late son.

The Australian politician lost her 33-year-old son Binni Kirkbright-Burney, who was gay, six weeks ago.

She began, ‘I have never had a second thought. It seemed so obvious to me.’

Binni was found dead in the families Sydney home, with Police declaring no suspicious circumstances.

Ms Burney told parliament, while holding back tears, ‘I support marriage equality as someone who has, and has had, loved ones who identify as LGBTQI.

‘To them marriage equality would mean so much. I honour these people and, in particular, my late son Binni.’

Ms Burney further explained she had seen firsthand the confusion and pain that many people experience when dealing with sexuality.
