The partner of the US police officer who fatally shot Australian woman Justine Damond was “stunned” when his colleague opened fire, sources say.

According to a Minneapolis news station KARE11, Matthew Harrity was speaking to the yoga instructor from the driver’s seat of a squad car when Mohamed Noor reached across him and pulled the trigger.

The pajama-clad 40-year-old was shot in the abdomen as she approached the vehicle in an alleyway behind her home. It’s believed she had called 911 to report a sexual assault.

Both Noor and Harrity have been put on “paid administrative leave” following the incident.

It has since been revealed that Noor – who had only been in the police force for two years – is also being sued over an excessive force complaint filed to the US District Court just three weeks before Damond’s death.

The 31-year-old officer has since offered the Sydney woman’s family his “condolences,” but has requested that his privacy be respected.

Damond’s death is being treated as a homicide and authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
