Three-month-old Zachery Bryant was the youngest victim of the horrific Bourke street rampage, with pictures of his overturned pram serving as a haunting reminder of the atrocity that took place in Melbourne this January.
While little Zachery’s two-year-old sister Zara – who was also in the pram – survived being flung 150m down the road – his own injuries proved fatal and he was pronounced brain dead in hospital.
Now parents Nawwar and Matthew Bryant have spoken out about the devastating moment they said goodbye to their little boy.
‘I was playing with him literally that morning in the living room… and the next minute he’s clinically dead,’ Matthew recalled to A Current Affair.
For mother, Nawwar, the image of the pram is devastating.
‘It reminds me of a life I once knew, a pram that carried both my children everywhere I went.
Speaking of the moment she was told Zachery wouldn’t survive, she said:
He was absolutely perfect, from the moment we knew we were going to have him right up to the time we laid him down to rest… he was the most perfect baby,’ she said.
‘We were able to hold him again and hug him one last time and have him in our arms, even though we knew we were holding a lifeless baby. We had to say goodbye.
‘My body was still in the mode to feed and care for him… I was still breastfeeding,’ she said.
The devastated mother also wrote a moving tribute to her son just days after the attack.
‘Every move I make, every corner of the house and every sight we pass by reminds me of my child,’ she said.
‘Memories of him are so deeply etched in my mind, I automatically connect something I see to a memory of him.’
‘He may not be physically in my arms anymore but besides photos and memories I will always remember him by wearing his birth scars on my body as badges of honour to have given birth to such an angel.’
Attacker Dimitrious Gargasoulas allegedly drove a car through the busy Melbourne shopping area earlier this year – he was charged with six counts of murder and remanded in custody until December.
