Nicole Kidman’s latest film role is one she feels deeply connected to.
In a recent interview with Town & Country magazine, the 49-year-old has explained why she chose to play Sue, in the upcoming adoption drama, Lion.
‘I can see now, for Lion, that it was important to me because I’m a mother with adopted children,’ she said. ‘This movie is a love letter to my children.’
In the film, Tasmanian-born Sue, adopts son, Saroo, from a village in India after he was accidentally separated from his birth family. 25 years later, Saroo embarks on a mission to find them using Google Earth to search for his home village.
Kidman adopted her two older children, Isabella, 23 and Connor, 21 with ex-husband Tom Cruise. The pair, who are devout scientologists like their father, chose to live with 54-year-old Cruise full-time after their parent’s divorce in 2001.
While it’s been widely reported that she has since had a strained relationship with her kids, Kidman explained in the interview why she wanted to dedicate her latest film to them.
‘Sue is deeply maternal and full of unconditional love, which is beautiful,’ Kidman said. ‘That’s why I wanted to do it. I relate to that. I feel that for my own children who are adopted. It’s not about anything else other than ‘I wanted you.’ Whatever your journey is, I’m here to love and support you. That’s what I connected to. I wanted to make the film for them.’
Set in both Australia and India, Lion is based on the non-fiction book, A Long Way Home, written by Saroo Brierley about his personal journey. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year and will hit cinemas around Australia on January 17.
Kidman is also mother to Sunday Rose, 8, and Faith Margaret, 5, with husband and singer Keith Urban.
