When it was revealed the dog caught up in the recent Murray River drowning tragedy was a pit bull cross, many assumed he’d attacked the nine-year-old boy after he had managed to escape.
However, Buddy’s owner Jess Smith says that assumption couldn’t be further from the truth.
Not only has three-and-a-half year old Buddy been cleared through official channels, but he’s gained an unlikely ally in the nine-year-old’s grandfather, who reached out to Jess to offer his support when Buddy was seized.
‘He was trying to save the boys… I have one grandson left because this brave dog took action as required,’ the bereft grandfather posted to Facebook.
After Buddy was seized, Jess set up an online petition to save him, which received more than 50,000 signatures from all over the world – including one from the boys’ grandfather.
‘To have the support of the boys’ family meant a great deal. They actually said that, if it wasn’t for Buddy, they wouldn’t have one grandson here today.’
NSW police have advised they will ‘not be seeking an order to destroy Buddy’, after a council spokeswoman told The Sydney Morning Herald: ‘It is likely that the dog was acting in reasonable defence of the nine-year-old boy.’
