Beauty blogger AJ Weir from the UK has confessed to spending over $2200 to have dimples cut into her cheeks in order to match her 11-year-old son’s smile.
The mum spent over a decade researching dimpleplasty procedure and despite friends and family telling her she was ‘bonkers’ AJ finally underwent surgery in September.
‘For a long time, I wanted dimples,’ she revealed.
‘In fact It was fair to say I was dimple obsessed . I could often be heard saying “Awwwww you have dimples” whilst fighting the urge to stick my fingers in them”.
She even admits to feeling jealous of her son, Morgan’s dimple in his right cheek.
‘It was like our creator thought, “poor cow let’s throw some onto the face of her child so she can look at them everyday as recompense”’ came her bizarre confession.
And despite the risks – surgery may not work and there is a possibility patients could be left with scarring – AJ pursued her dimple dream.
‘For a lot of people this seems like a really stupid cosmetic procedure and it seems insane to start messing about with your own face.
‘Some people say you should just be happy with what you’ve got and I get that but this was something I wanted to do.
‘I could afford to do it and I wasn’t going to put my family in any sort of financial crisis by doing it, so why not?’
Under a local anaesthetic, surgeons took chunks from the inside of her mouth and stitched the gaps up.
She said: ‘As it heals and the scar tissue forms, it breaks the muscle so that when you smile the tissue pulls in and that creates the dimple effect.
‘I was totally awake the whole time. It was a bit like going to the dentist.
‘They inject the outside and the inside of your cheek and they pack your mouth open, but all you can feel is pressure.’
‘Within two weeks, people said I looked really good and that I had healed so well.
‘Some people do notice that I have dimples now and didn’t before, but there’s no point going through all that if people don’t see them.
‘My husband and my son think I’m absolutely bonkers and I can understand that.
‘I can agree that is unnecessary to an extent – it’s not going to make me more successful, but it was just something that I wanted.
‘My dimples look really natural. You wouldn’t think that I’ve had surgery.’
