While celebrity ambassadors showed up in bold colours – looking a million dollars – those who had purchased tickets to enjoy the day trackside were photographed clutching their drinks as they braved the rain.

Channel 7 racing commentator Jason Richardson said stewards may consider a major delay to proceedings if conditions are deemed “unsafe” but appeared confident the races wouldn’t be called off.

“No (the day won’t get called off), they have a choice of trying to aerate the track to try to get the water to soak in or we have a delay and try to let the showers pass and try to see if the water will soak in,” he said.

However, the rain caused chaos on the roads and difficulties for those trying to walk around the racecourse on foot.

Women wearing heels and gorgeous dresses were spotted trudging through the rain-soaked grass as the pooling water lapped against their stylish shoes.

Other punters huddled together under large umbrellas and draped wraps around their shoulders in a bid to escape the inclement weather.

A group of three young racegoeers were spotted each wearing a large plastic poncho over their glamorous race attire.

Each was snapped holding the plastic hoods of their ponchos up over their heads to protect their hair-styles from the downpour.

One glamorous racegoer was spotted running through the rain in flat shoes – with what appeared to be her stylish nude heels clutched in her left hand.

She was accompanied by another well-dressed friend, who was also clutching her gold heels in one hand – and a large black umbrella in another.
