The sauce that is smothered all over a McDonald’s Big Mac has a legendary reputation – so much so that it is known world over as the cryptically named ‘Special Sauce’.
But now, a recipe that was apparently a secret known only to a few trusted Maccas insiders has allegedly been leaked!
A post circulating on Pinterest claims to list the definitive ingredients of the iconic burger sauce – however, McDonald’s haven’t said on word on whether or not they are correct.
The list includes 33 items including soybean oil, pickle relish, distilled vinegar, mustard, and salted egg yolks. Unsurprisingly there’s a fair few artificial colours, thickeners, and a preservative thrown in there too.
Because a lot of these ingredients are more about extending the shelf-life of the sauce, and making it look good on the fast-made, fast-served Big Mac, many of them are actually not needed to nail the *taste* of Maccas’ Big Mac Special Sauce. And recipes abound online that only use a handful of ingredients you probably already have to hand.
Kelly Brinkley’s recipe over at Mom Deals claims that all you need is:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons French dressing
- 4 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
- 1 tablespoon finely minced white onion
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
Cooking is as simple as stirring all the ingredients together in a bowl, and refrigerating them, covered, overnight. She recommends giving it a stir every now and then.
