A 33-year-old man has been arrested after his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter suffered burns to her buttocks allegedly from an iron being pressed to her jeans.
Police allege that Victor Diaz, of Bristol, Connecticut, was ironing clothes at home while the girl played on the bed nearby.
Officers say he became enraged when she rolled onto some ironed clothes – potentially wrinkling them – so he pressed the hot iron to her buttocks, and burned her through her jeans.
The girl’s father noticed the iron-shaped scar on the girl’s body 9 months after the incident. His daughter told him what happened, but when he confronted his ex-girlfriend, the girl’s mother, she said it was a rash.
The Bristol Press report that when interviewed by police the girl’s mother changed her story to say that the iron had fallen onto her bare skin, causing the burn. Police contradict this argument, saying that the scars left indicate the burn was made through clothing.
He has been arraigned charges including assault and reckless endangerment, but did not enter a guilty or not guilty plea.
Justice Richard Dyer told Diaz he really ought to hire a lawyer.
