A haunting letter written by 10-year-old Burke St massacre victim Thalia Hakin just months before her death has been uncovered.
Thalia was one of five people killed when a man allegedly mowed down pedestrians with a stolen car in the heart of Melbourne’s CDB last Friday.
The letter was written by the young girl between the Jewish celebrations of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur as part of an international schoolgirl’s competition and has been published online by The Australian Jewish News.
“When you light up a candle you light up your neshema [soul],” Thalia penned.
“And you light up the world. And when you light up the world you make it a better place. Like for you, me and everybody.”
“Now the world is dark but soon to be bright for us. And im yirtezeh hashem [God willing] mashiach [the messiah] will come.”
Thalia’s chilling words are due appear in One More Light, a book published by Jewish Girls Unite, next month.
The “Little Jewish princess” was farewelled in an emotional funeral service on Wednesday, where she was remembered as a loving older sister to Maggie, 9, who along with mother, Nathalie, was also injured in the incident.
“From the day she was born until the day she died, that girl gave me pride and gave me joy,” her father Tony Hakin said in his eulogy.
