Kyle Sandilands went on a furious rant on-air this morning defending ‘Intern Pete’ over his radio stunt at a press junket with cricketer Steve Smith.
Pete Deppeler was slammed by cricket fans over his bizarre comment, with Sandilands revealing his colleague had been told to ‘hang himself’ over the incident.
‘What if Intern Pete actually took his own life after the weekend?… It’s dangerous,’ the radio jock said.
‘They [haters] want his mother dead. What sort of people are these people? It’s a f**king game… This kid could have killed himself over the weekend because of all the hell he’s been put through. Imagine if he’d taken his own life because some flog somewhere who’s so obsessed with cricket wanted him dead?’
He added: ‘Who cares? It’s a cricket game at the end of the day … he got death threats, people threatened Intern Pete with death — these are loons.
‘We didn’t know he was going to [ask the question], but I still support him — I couldn’t give a s**t.’
Disgraced cricketer Steve Smith was in the middle of an emotional press conference, where he addressing his role in the ball tampering saga, when ‘Intern Pete’ made a bizarre reference to Married At First Sight.
Cricket Australia pulled their ads from the radio network as a result of the stunt – not that Sandilands seemed to care.
‘We’ll decide whether he stays or goes, certainly not Cricket Australia, who’ve decided not to advertise anymore … Oh, my heart bleeds. What’d we play, two ads?,’ he quipped.
Intern Pete apologised for his comment after receiving so much backlash from the Australian public.
