New detail from the AAP reveals the sound of fireworks may have startled the US officer who fatally shot NSW woman Justine Ruszczyk.
An officer at a police station near where Ruszczyk, 40, was shot claims to have heard fireworks being set off at the time of the shooting.
This reference to fireworks can be heard in a discussion between Officer Mohamed Noor, the policeman who fired the bullet, and his partner on police radio.
In this radio recording, the dispatcher can be heard asking a precinct sergeant to acknowledge a report of “two shots heard from the east”.
“We heard those sounds from the station,” an officer responds.
“Those are probably aerial fireworks.”
Ruszczyk called police at 11.28pm on Saturday when she heard a woman’s screams near her Minneapolis home. She was later killed by a bullet fired through a police squad-car door.
Little more is known as the responding officers did not have either the dashboard cam or personal body cameras on at the time of the incident.
Minnesota senator Al Franken has come out on Twitter saying, “The death of Justine Damond is an inexplicable tragedy. Any loss of innocent life in our communities is devastating. We need a swift, thorough investigation to get to the bottom of what happened.”
A vigil was held for Ruszczyk, a spiritual healer and life coach from Sydney’s northern beaches, at Freshwater beach this morning.
